( CHARACTER INFORMATION )

Name/Work Name: Ral Zarek/Maxwell
Canon: Magic: The Gathering
Canon Point: post-Project Lightning Bug
AU/CRAU: N
Age: Unknown. Looks late-30s at the very least.
History: Over here is a wiki link.
Personality: Ral Zarek is a dick.

But seriously: one of the biggest and most obvious attributes of Ral is that he tends to be kind of smug and egotistical. It's not like he doesn't have a reason for it; as a rule, he's very good at reading people and, summarily, deceiving them -- about basically everything but his greatness. His status as a Planeswalker is pretty important and probably is not something most could easily hide, and yet he managed to hide it from his boss, the dragon Niv-Mizzet, the smartest being in his world. (So, suffice to say, on top of everything else, he's a really good liar, too.) At times, this can make him incredibly petty (see: his reasons for killing Melek; basically, during the Return to Ravnica arc, his guild chose someone else to run the "Implicit Maze" -- an energy creature they developed to be perfect for the job -- and Ral killed that creature and absorbed it because he wasn't the one set to run the Maze), short-tempered and rash.

He hates failure -- especially his own -- and it's not unusual for him to start fights to accomplish his goals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he's also prone to vengeful behavior. Yet for as strongly motivated as he is by his own selfish interests, he's not completely incapable of setting those aside for a greater good at times -- as seen when he tricked Niv-Mizzet so he would not discover the existence of Planeswalkers. Also, even with all his posturing, he can even set that aside, especially if it will further his interests. (People generally react more favorably to humility than to brashness.) He knows when he needs help, even if he's hesitant to ask for it.

Ral also has a bit of a playful side -- though most people would instead consider it annoying. He's a bit of a trickster, enjoying challenging himself (to keep sharp) and others (because he delights in outshining them), but he does tend to not engage in this right away (both because establishing a relationship as negative immediately is not that beneficial outside of amusement, and because he hates to fail to earn reactions and it's easier to do that when he knows people better). He tends to learn a lot about what makes others tick. Surprising nobody, he has difficulty making friends. Those he does have, though, he holds in very high esteem. Those hidden depths and feelings he does have -- and they are there -- he will only ever divulge to his close friends (everyone else is just subject to his posturing). He's well aware of his weaknesses. He also probably has a surprising amount of insecurities about him. (Also he only has one friend at the moment -- fellow Planeswalker Jace Beleren, whom he previously hated because he seemed to be smarter than Ral.)

He takes his work seriously. As a member of the Izzet League, as much as his boss seemed like a nuisance above all else, he was very serious about the research and development he did for him. He enjoyed making new discoveries and considered improving the world to be a worthy cause, and like many Izzet, was very curious and had a strong thirst for knowledge. He enjoyed his work well enough, but disliked his boss greatly. Like many Izzet, Ral is very skilled with machinery. He's a quick learner in that area especially. Naturally curious, his curiosity manifests in a tendency to push limits. (Which, you know, kind of leads to the above.)

Debt: Under the guise of gaining something that'll help his research and development be better-accepted, he's working off his debt from that time when he killed Melek because, you know, HUGE EGO.

Inventory: Ral carried around a lot of weird machinery. At least one of the things he has appears to be some kind of electrical generator? Maybe? Some of this is integrated into his clothing. So for the large part his inventory is his outfit.

Abilities: Ral's a Planeswalker. So he can travel between dimensions with surprising ease. That, obviously, is going to be locked in Koriko. Why let him have an easy escape? Aside from this, most of his best magic is focused on electricity, lightning, and generally is akin to weather manipulation -- wind-based spells, stuff like that. It's also suggested that he has access to some sort of time magic (source: his card has an ability that can grant extra turns, which is always flavored as time travel). I assume this is going to be locked, or at least toned down. Like, does he NEED to be more bullshit

Skills, fighting techniques, all of the above in what makes their character special and unique; if they are a regular human, go into their normal skill set! Are they fast at typing? Do they have a photogenic memory? Give us what you’ve got!

Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Very smart and a quick learner
+ Highly magically competent
+ Skilled with technology
+ Committed to his work -- with very few exceptions
+ Unshakeable convictions -- the only thing that can divert him from his commitment to his work.

- Mostly uses his intelligence to be a complete jerk to other people
- Huge ego
- Can have a pretty foul temper
- Works poorly with others and has few friends
- Deeply insecure but refuses to talk about his problems

( SAMPLE )

Characterization Sample:

This was a world Ral had never seen before -- perhaps not unlike others he'd been to, but that wasn't enough. Even he wasn't about to assume that his pattern-recognition skills would serve him that well. He'd have to get some information if he wanted to get any sort of foothold in this new place. Some brief, careful observation could take him a long way, just for starters -- well within his skill set for sure -- but anything else, he'd have to ask someone about.

Ral bit his lip. He did his best work by himself or with the minimum of help. Just asking someone else for help was sounding unappealing, but he was here for a reason -- he was after something very specific -- and sure hoped whoever it was he asked didn't want to come with him. That would be such a pain. Ral was a bit short on tact, and maybe making proper enemies right off would be a bad idea.

Thankfully, though, when he planeswalked here, he arrived very close to a town, which he immediately headed toward. Surely someone here could help him – and indeed, someone there quickly recognized him as not being from the area – it took a lot for him to blend in with that generator strapped to his back – and asked him where he was from and if he was going somewhere (which he explained that he was – omitting information about where he was from).

The next question the local asked was, of course, whether he knew the way or if he needed help. Again, Ral bit his lip, weighing his options briefly. “No,” he replied, “I'm fine.”

Mentally, he cursed himself out a little. This person was perfectly willing to try and give him some directions, and he threw that away because he didn't want them to try and come with and weigh him down. Anticipating this going afoul now, he grumbled and bit his lip. He'd have to find someone else to ask for help. He couldn't go back to that same guy; he didn't want to seem like an idiot to this complete stranger whom he probably would never see again in his life and who would have no future effect on him whatsoever. He had an image to uphold – an image nobody knew anything about.

Quickly, he ran a little further into town, then turned to the nearest person he could find. After confirming they were not the same person that had spoken to them, he made his way toward them. “Hey! Can you help me with something?” he shouted in their general direction.
